2011 So Far

It’s been a funny old start to the new year. On the sad front, first Pete Postlethwaite died and then Dr Rex Walford OBE is presumed dead following a boating accident.

However, on the plus side for theatre a couple of records have been made in the West End. First the producers of Wicked announced that the show grossed more than one million pounds in a single week at the end of December 2010. Then the producers of Disney’s Lion King announced that they grossed more than thirty four million pounds in 2010.

Personally I think one of the most important announcements is that the Coalition Government have promised to update the child licensing laws. This involves considering whether amateur theatre should be removed from the legislation completely. Of course, this isn’t a Government known for keeping its promises so we shall have to wait and see.

Finally it was nice to see some good choices in the New Year’s Honours List. My personal favourite was the award of a CBE to David Suchet who is an excellent actor and genuinely nice to his fans.
