First Steps For Strolling Players

How often have you seen a promenade theatre production by an amateur theatre company?  Not many I bet.  Come to that how many have you seen by a professional theatre company?  Promenade theatre is not the first choice for many theatre companies, but with a little thought and understanding, it can be a highly entertaining experience for both the audience and the actors.

I’ll confess, this isn’t something I knew much about but this booklet by Ann Thomson made me think twice about this medium of theatre.  Ann Thomson has organised and directed amateur promenade productions indoors, out of doors, and a combination of both.  The First Steps For Strolling Players booklet draws on her practical experience in areas such as the choice and use of promenade venue, adapting rehearsal and performance techniques, the nature of the contract with the audience, crowd management and wet-weather contingency planning.

There is advice for directors and production managers, actors, stage managers and technicians and those responsible for publicity and front-of-house duties.  The booklet is laid out well with obvious chapters cover everything I can think of.

The booklet can be obtained from the author and costs £3.50.  Payment is by cheque only and should be made payable to Ann Thomson and sent to Rowe Head Farm, Pennington, Ulverston, LA12 0RR
