The Snow Queen
Having read this script, without the benefit of the music, I wasn’t sure if I was reading a pantomime, a musical, or a family play ideally for the festive season.
The Snow Queen tells the story of how a young boy, Kay, falls under the spell of the Snow Queen and is transported to her ice palace at the North Pole. It also tells of his cousin , Gerda, who after waiting for Kay to return after 5 years, sets off on her own to find him.
The Snow Queen epitomises wickedness, and makes frequent appearances throughout the play, along with her hobgoblin followers, reminding us of what is happening to Kay. Wither her lines all in rhyme she does come across as a typical pantomime villain.
On the reverse is the Spirit of Spring, who acts as a narrator throughout the play, and only occasionally interacts with the Snow Queen, other than that she is removed from the action.
On her journey, Gerda meets several “friends”, mainly animals, such as Elsie & Bert Crow, and Rudi Reindeer, and these interactions form individual scenes.
The Snow Queen is full of musical numbers, and dance/ballet routines, which are all original numbers written by Kate Edgar, so application for the score will be essential.
I personally feel this is a play rather than a pantomime, as it lacked the traditional panto elements, and there is a shortage of humour, unlike most pantos.
I feel this would be a perfect production for schools, youth theatres or drama workshop environment. However if your group ha a large cast available, with a strong singing / dancing chorus, and you are looking for something different this Christmas, then this could be the play for you.
