Wuthering Heights

Permanent Link to Wuthering Heights

This adaptation is very true to the original novel and follows the central characters Cathy and Heathcliffe from early childhood through to the tragic finale.

It follows the relationship of the inseparable friends when young, and the audience assume that this will continue into adulthood, however as their love develops Cathy heartless reasons that she must follow her head and marry into property and position. She therefore abandons Heathcliffe and decides to marry wealthy Edgar Linton.

Heathcliffe returns years later a changed man, with only revenge in his heart, and seeks recompense from those responsible to destroying his life and love.

This play demands a lot from the technical crew as there are twenty four scenes in total, ranging from interior scenes at Wuthering Heights to outdoor scenes on the windswept Yorkshire Moors. All this has to be done with lighting and special effects, as there is limited time for elaborate scene changes.

The cast also will require a little doubling, as there are some minor roles that only appear in one scene. Your group can get away with doing this with a minimum of ten (6M4F). They will need to also be able to persuade the audience to use their imagination when it comes to several scenes, particularly those involving various animals- unless your group has a cast of dogs that can perform to cue!

I felt this was a little fast paced for my taste, and you would benefit from having previous knowledge of the novel before seeing / reading this. However it did provoke a sense of desperation and hopeless love.
