A chance to shine – Calling all amateur dramatic groups!
On Wednesday the 26th of November in the small Sussex town of East Grinstead audiences donned their finest frocks and dinner jackets to travel down the red carpet and attend THE DEBRAS. The event was a sell out and attendees gathered to find out who had won coveted awards for best actress, actor, director, choreographer, musical director, newcomer, youth show, show and outstanding commitment.
The event dubbed ‘East Grinstead’s answer to the Oscars’ is all in a good cause and proceeds go to DEBRA, the charity working for a life free from pain for Epidermolysis Bullosa sufferers. Many people will be aware of the debilitating skin condition when Channel 4 filmed the dying days of EB sufferer Jonny Kennedy, his was a short but inspirational life and the documentary touched the heart of millions. Since watching ‘The boy whose skin fell off’, organiser Angela Scullin felt compelled to start a fundraising event to support the work of DEBRA and having worked in theatre for ten years decided to organise a local ‘Oscars’ style ceremony, celebrating the work of amateur theatre groups and individuals in the local area. The event is always popular and is now in its fourth year continuing to raise money and awareness.
Angela has now joined forces with Laura Pratt from the charity Debra and they want to encourage other local theatres and arts groups to hold their own ‘Debras’ ceremony. The event is easy to organise and not only raises much needed funds for the charity but also raises the profile of local arts groups and theatres. Ultimately Angela and Laura want to hold regional and national finals and Laura has contacts with celebrity supporters of the charity and is keen to get them on board to support the national finals. If you want an opportunity to have your groups work recognised at a national level and want to run your own ‘Debras’ event then email Laura and she will send a HOW TO guide to running your own event which has been compiled by Angela herself.
