This is a chilling version of the story which will be performed in the narrative theatre style with a bare stage and actors switching between narrating the story and playing the many parts (with lots of doubling up).
The characters
There are 23 parts which will be played by 11 actors, approx 4 women and 7 men. The main characters are:
- Count Dracula – a Transylvanian aristocrat; also a vampire – (could look any age)
- Jonathan Harker– a young lawyer; engaged to Mina – (25 – 35)
- Mr Hawkins –a solicitor; Jonathan’s employer – (40 – 60)
- Landlady – at the Golden Krone Hotel in Bistitz, Transylvania (45 – 65)
- A lost girl –Jonathan meets on his way to Castle Dracula – (needs to look young)
- Mina Murray – an intelligent young woman; engaged to Jonathan (20 – 30)
- Lucy Westenra – Mina’s friend since childhood; lives in Whitby (20 – 30)
- Dr John Seward – a young doctor in charge of asylum in Whitby; also admires Lucy (25 – 45)
- Quincy Morris – a well-travelled young American; also admires Lucy (25 – 45)
- Arthur Holmwood – only son of Lord Goldaming; engaged to Lucy
- Mr Swales – Whitby’s oldest inhabitant (40 – 70)
- Renfield – a patient at Doctor Seward’s asylum (40 – 70)
- Mrs Westenra – Lucy’s mother (45 – 65)
- Professor Van Helsing – once Doctor Seward’s tutor; an expert on vampires (30 – 55)
