Auditions – Oedipus the King

by KellyMcGibney19 October 2011

Oedipus the King

Sunday 6th (5pm) & Monday 7th November (8pm).

Oedipus is the King of a diseased and dying city, who turns to him in their hour of need as they did before when he first saved them from the curse of the Sphinx. What he doesn’t realise is that he is the cause of their suffering, and the truth unfolds piece by piece until the real horror is more unbearable than he possibly could have imagined.

This translation by Steven Berg and Diskin Clay holds so much opportunity for its performers and so much promise for the audience. It will be at times a challenge but never a bore, not with us directing!
We are looking for a dedicated cast who will be eager to try out new ideas and are willing to give it their all, after all, this play is over 2000 years old and we need to do it justice! We will be using music and movement in varied ways, and the chorus will play a key role in keeping the whole performance together.

The characters ages are given as a rough guide only, and are as follows…

Oedipus – Large male role, 30′s to 50′s. King of Thebes and husband/son to Jocasta.
Kreon – Medium male role, 30′s to 50′s and Jocasta’s brother.
Teiresias/Shepherd – Medium male role, 50′s plus. Prophet of Apollo.
Jocasta – Medium female role, 30′s to 50′s. Queen of Thebes and Oedipus’ wife/mother
Chorus/servant – Medium role, any gender/age
Chorus/Assistant to Teiresias – Medium role, any gender/age
Chorus/Priest – Medium role, any gender, 30′s+
Chorus/Messenger – Medium male role, 30′s+
Chorus Leader – Medium role, any gender/age.

Please don’t let the age guides put you off auditioning, we can be flexible, it just needs to fit with whoever else is cast.
The chorus are on for most if not all of the play in some form or another, but it does not mean you will be needed for every rehearsal.

The performance runs 13th to 17th March 2012 and the rehearsals will be on Sundays, Mondays and Wednesdays.
