Auditions – The Country Wife
An outdoor performance of The Country Wife will take place in the courtyard of Haddon Hall, Bakewell, Derbyshire, between the 8-10 July.
Calling all local actors!
Lord Edward Manners is offering an opportunity to perform in the medieval courtyard at Haddon Hall this summer. From 8 – 10 July, Haddon Hall will stage The Country Wife by William Wycherley, the bawdy, fast-paced Restoration comedy centred around the libertine Horner and his secret affairs with married women, a dangerous ploy which coincides with the arrival in London of an inexperienced young “country wife”, and her discovery of the joys of town life, especially the fascinating London men.
The Country Wife, written in 1675 was deemed so scandalous that it was kept off stage and out of print until 1924.
Hall Manager, Janet Blackburn says, “Haddon is the perfect location for this play with the Hall’s long history of entertainment and perfromance. The courtyard has a natural stage and this period piece will work exceptionally well in this setting.”
To stage the play, Haddon Hall are working with local director, Jonathan Francis, who has been behind a number of performance projects at the Hall over the last few years. “We are seeking out local actors, professional and non-professional; we really want to make this a community production and to involve the abundance of local talent we have on offer,” said Jonathan.
Auditions for actors aged 16 and above will be held at Haddon Hall on Wednesday 19th May at 7pm. Participants will be asked to prepare a one minute speech from a play of their choice as part of their audition.
