The Death of Ivan Ilyich
I have adapted Tolstoy’s short novel for the theatre and would like to hear from any group interested in giving it a reading.
Here is a synopsis:
Life has been good to Ivan. He has risen steadily up the ranks in the Justice Ministry, has a “quite pretty” wife and two children in private education. Everything is fine. One day he comes home early from work and his wife asks him to help her hang some new curtains. While doing so, he slips off the ladder and bumps his side. He feels a slight pain but thinks nothing of it. Soon, though, he notices an odd taste in his mouth. The pain gets steadily worse . . .
The play follows Tolstoy’s story quite closely. It has, of course, a serious theme (mortality) but Tolstoy injects moments of pure comedy.
