(PART ONE) THE SCHOOL OF ROCK & ROLL -
(PART TWO) THE DEATH OF PIRATE RADIO
Can be performed as one play – or two shorter pieces with music from the 1960’s.
PART ONE: Follows the lives of Dorothy and Reg, their love, anguish, struggles and finally success, through the progression of music from post war 1940’s to the rock and roll era.
Reg is constantly moving on – trying new things. First a hairdresser, a compere for big bands, making sweets and selling them on the markets, becoming a radio and television repair man etc. He starts to import music from the U.S.A. Chuck Berry – Rock Around the Clock etc. He decides he wants to run dances for ‘teenagers’ and puts together probably the first UK rock and roll bands. Has an affair with a singer. Dorothy and Reg come back together and he buys a big country house, called Clifton Hall, which becomes known as the ‘School of Rock and Roll.
PART TWO: Reg Calvert has a dream to own a radio station. His wife, Dorothy, is totally opposed to him when he decides he wants to have his own pirate radio station. He loses everything, their beautiful house and his family. He piles up debts to follow his dream but eventually turns things around and begins to make a success.
A fast moving play based on actual events with a strong love story, larger than life characters and ends with the death of pirate radio due to the tragic shooting of Reg Calvert.
The play can be performed by amateur theatre groups free of charge.
