The Mitre Players present
A MAN FOR ALL SEASONS By Robert Bolt
The Mitre Theatre, Trinity School, Shirley Park, Croydon, CR9 7AT. Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th April 2017 at 7.30pm
Robert Bolt’s tense play of conscience and martyrdom is set in one of the most turbulent periods of English history. Sir Thomas More is friend of, and former tutor to, Henry VIII who appoints him as his Lord Chancellor. More’s conscience prevents him from supporting the King’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon and the King, with reluctance, allows him to resign from his office.
More believes that he will be left to live a quiet life, as he has made no statement regarding the King’s marriage to Anne Boleyn. Such is his reputation in the kingdom and in Europe that the King thinks otherwise, enlisting his ambitious secretary, Thomas Cromwell, to secure More’s agreement to the marriage or to bring about his destruction. Bolt’s play shows a man prepared to lose everything to stand by what he believes in.
Staged in Trinity School’s comfortable Mitre Theatre, we proudly present the stage production which inspired the famous 1966 Oscar winning film. In the long tradition of Mitre Players’ historical dramas, we promise to take you back to Tudor times, the same era as BBC TV’s Wolf Hall, to relive this exciting period of English history.
