Joe Keller reveres the twin American gods: family and profit; however his pursuit of the “American Dream” is flawed. The war brought mixed blessings for the Kellers; his business, supplying aero engines for the American war effort, has prospered, but their younger son, Larry, is missing in action. With the conflict now over, Joe’s wife, Kate, still clings to the hope that Larry is alive, whilst her husband and elder son, Chris, are resigned to the fact of his death.
The arrival of Larry’s fiancée (and former neighbour), Ann, followed by her brother, triggers a fateful chain of events. In the course of a single day, Joe is confronted with a guilty secret and the tragic consequences of a moral abdication, forcing Kate to face up to the reality of Larry’s fate.
Arthur Miller’s powerful, award winning play affirms the truth of moral and social responsibility, and the consequence of their denial.
