Extra Information

  • Notes: This classic Broadway musical tells the story of Annie Oakley, an illiterate hillbilly with a talent for shooting that earns her a place as assistant to Frank Butler, the champion sharpshooter with Buffalo Bill’s travelling Wild West Show. Uneducated and distinctly tomboyish Annie knows she is not exactly Frank’s type but she is determined to win him all the same. Keen to impress him in the only way she knows how – with her marksmanship – she unwittingly outshines him with her talent and soon finds out that ‘You Can’t Get a Man with a Gun’. Frank joins a rival show and all hope of the pair doing ‘a little merging’ seems lost until Annie comes to the realisation that sometimes to win you have to be prepared to lose. Irving Berlin’s score which has been described as ‘simply the most enchanting and distinguished complete score he ever wrote’ is packed with well-known songs including: ‘Doin’ what comes naturally’, ‘There’s no business like show business’, ‘They say that falling in love is wonderful’, and ‘You can’t get a man with a gun’. Funny, toe-tapping and bursting with energy, Annie Get Your Gun is a show not to be missed.
