Extra Information
- The first Pirates Thursday date confirmed is Thursday August 27th, in Brixham at the old Fishmarket (We have performed there before and it works very well for open air theatre!) The main show would be in the evening probably about 7 or 7.30pm start, so dont worry if you are not available during the day. We expect the show to last about half an hour. But going from previous experiences of performing at the fishmarket, do not be suprised if we are asked by the public to perform twice in the evening. There will also be an evening show at the British Legion, date to be arranged at mutual convenience, probably in September, to raise funds for the Legion, and we are also looking at the second Saturday in September for a performance in the theatre/music space at the Hole In the Wall pub in town (to be confirmed or altered depending on cast availibility.)I would like to stress that in Spring 2010, we expect to be resurrecting this show again for some (not all, maybe once a month or every 6 weeks) Pirate Thursdays, again aiming at evening performances, and therefore it is preferred to cast people who, as far as they know, expect to be availible then, in the large roles, or to cast understudies. . Rehearsals will take place each Wednesday evening 7.30 sharp until 8.30/ 9pm, at the Legion:
This is a show that we will be doing on behalf of the Brixham Buccanneers as part of Pirate Thursdays. The show itself is a recreation of part of the trial of Anne Bonney and Mary Reed, adapted from the court transcipts of their trial in 1720 (as supplied to us by the Buccanneers). Historically Anne and Mary were two lady pirates (possibly the only two recorded)
Mary was originally from Plymouth and served with the British Army (dressed as a man of course) before becoming a pirate, and Anne was originally from Ireland, her family must have been well to do as they aquired a plantation in South Carolina, and it is from there that Anne ran away to sea.
They both ended up in the pirate crew of Calico Jack Rackham, (he and Anne were lovers), and after a series of piratical exploits were captured by the Navy off Jamaica. Jack was the first to be tried and hung, it is said that Anne, far from being sympathetic, told him, just prior to his execution “If you had fought like a man, you would not now be hung like a dog!”. There is no record of either Anne or Mary being executed, and … well you’ll have to read the script to find out the rest!
As well as there being quite a few roles for men and women in the script itself, we would like to also have a sequence at the beginning, depending on who is interested and able to be involved, this would either be a lively harbour/tavern scene in the Jamaican port, OR of Calico Jack, Anne, Mary and one or two other pirates being marched through the streets to prison (also advertising the show in the evening). This however would depend on the availibility of cast members, as the “capture” would take place in the afternoon, “setting the scene” for the main play in the evening. Dont worry if you are only available in the evening! Please come and audition in any case!
