Auditions – Murder in the Cathedral

I’ll be auditioning for actors to take part in TS Eliot’s Murder in the Cathedral at 8pm on 6 and 8 July at Amersham Free Church in Amersham, South Bucks.

The play is a bold and dramatic retelling of the murder of Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, in his own cathedral in 1170. It has plenty of good parts, nearly all of which can be played by actors of any age, and features some of the greatest stage verse since Shakespeare. It will be staged in St Mary’s Church, Amersham, from 18 to 21 November 2009.

There are nine roles for men and five for women. The male roles are Becket, three priests, a messenger, four tempters and four knights. (The tempters will be doubled with the knights.) The women play the chorus, but this is not a conventional chorus; they are on stage throughout, are very much part of the action, and carry the emotional sub-text of the play.
