Are you bored sitting at home doing the same old thing?  Want to get out and about a bit more and make some new friends?  Then why not join the Concorde Players, the friendly amateur dramatics group not far fromHeathrowAirport.  The group are looking for talented actors, singers and dancers to join them onstage for their next pantomime “Robin Hood and the Babes in the Wood” which will be staged in January.

The show, with a great, script by Peter Denyer, is a thigh-slapping, magical adventure featuring a host of colourful characters and vibrant musical numbers.  See below for details.

It’s not just actors that we are looking for, we need a range of people with different skills to help us put on a show; these include anyone who is handy with a hammer, a paint brush or a saw; those who can read music or play instruments; anyone who can rustle up something fabulous from a few pieces of fabric and some Velcro and anyone with a talent for marketing our group, selling our tickets or welcoming our patrons.

You can become part of the magic by coming along to the read throughs on Monday 12th September and Thursday 15th September at 6:30pm and on Sunday 18th September at at 12:30pm in the Olympus Hall of The Concorde Club, Cranford, TW5 9PQ.

No experience necessary – just talent and enthusiasm.

See www.concordeplayers.co.uk for full details or contact the show’s director Martin Sanders at martin_sanders [at] btinternet [dot] com.

 About the show:
In this witty combination of two favourite stories, the outlawed people’s hero battles the wicked Sheriff of Nottingham in a classic pantomime battle between Good and Evil.

The Babes’ nanny, Nurse Norah, and Herman, the Sheriff’s cowardly, bungling and very, very dim henchman, bring plenty of comedy to proceedings along the way.

Can Robin, assisted by his band of Merry Men including Little John, Friar Tuck and Will Scarlet, and with a little help from the benevolent ‘Spirit of the Greenwood’, rescue the babes from the greedy, clutches of their uncle, the Sheriff, and win the hand of the fair Maid Marian?  Well, of course he can!  This is panto after all – but you’ll have to be there to find out how.

With songs and laughter, mischief and mayhem this show is fun for all the family.

The Characters:

The Sheriff of Nottingham
Male (30>), think Black Adder and you won’t go wrong, Villain of the show, scheming and maniacal in all of his doings. Always try to turn the situation to his advantage and doesn’t care about anybody, even his Ward Maid Marian or his Henchman, Herman. Must have a good, loud voice and will have one solo song.

The Spirit of the Greenwood
Female (any age) Fairy of the show, a supporter and friend to Robin Hood and will try to protect him and the Babes at all costs. Will most probably be played either as wood nymph or a as a majestic Stag or Deer not scared of the Sheriff in anyway. No singing parts currently but a solo or a chorus piece in the Backlight scene may be added if required. Must be played as kind and gentle, but powerful enough to take on the Sheriff.

Robin Hood
Male or Female (<30 )Hero of the piece, must be a good singer as there are solos, duets and chorus numbers, must be able to “move” in dance. Cheeky, strong and very, very brave. A Kind heart towards the Babes and falls in love with Maid Marian. Must be played as a strong character and must have excellent comedy timing.

Maid Marian
Female – Principal Girl (<25) Marian, although the principal girl, is a very strong willed character, kind and loving and says what she thinks, she is not your typical “Damsel in Distress” she isn’t scared of the Sheriff or Herman, she is just not physically strong to take them on, but mentally she is their superior. Must have a good singing voice for solos, duets and Chorus numbers again should be able to dance.

Will Scarlet
Male or female (any age) would be good if could be played “camp” in bright fuchsia outfit. Good singer as has chorus numbers to do, must be able to “move”

Friar Tuck
Male or female (any age) ideally suited to the “tubbier” actors, but not essential as padding can be used. Comic timing must be good and have a dry sense of humour and wit. Chorus singing only

Little John
Male (30>) ideally very tall or very well built or conversely very tiny and demure (comedy angle) minor chorus singing and movement.

Herman the Henchman
Male (any age) the Comedy Villain and turns good guy in the end. Can have one solo song if required, scared of the Sheriff and of his own shadow, isn’t really bad, but is too dim to do anything else than to take orders from him. Clumsy oaf, witless and very, very dim, good character voice needed to portray his silliness, good visual and facial expression needed to put over the right slant on the character.

Nurse Norah
Male (25>) The Dame has solo and chorus songs, typical dame character – no explanation needed, if you need it explaining then sorry your not our Dame!

Janet / James
Girl ideally but can be a boy (<12) one of the Babes if we cannot get a female we will have 2 boys. If a girl sickly sweet and a little cheeky and very, very girly. If a boy, extremely cheeky and naughty, no singing other than chorus, but lots of lines to learn.

John
Boy (<12) very cheeky but strong character and not afraid of the Sheriff his “Unky Wunky” or Herman, doesn’t think he needs a nurse and is very sure of himself. Good old fashion boy “Just William” type no singing other than chorus, but lots of lines to learn.

The Voice of Beelzebub
Male or female (any age) is only on at the very beginning, deep, booming scary voice needed. Can be one of the chorus.

Chorus Roles:
Villagers
Soldiers
Merry Men – extras where needed, can just go with Robin, WS, LJ & FT
Toys Kids only if possible but can use “smaller” cast members.
Birds – Chorus
