Allow The Marlborough Players to entertain you this June with their latest production – ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’. Mr Sloane is a bottle blond, bisexual likely-lad straight from the swinging Sixties, and the swaggering antihero of Joe Orton’s masterful black comedy of lust, leather, and lethal one-liners: “Go ahead. Ask me to marry you. On your knees. I’m a great believer in traditional positions.” When Sloane takes a room in Kath’s house he detonates three Acts of blissful comic chaos – leaving his landlady in the family way, getting blackmailed into bed by her insatiable brother, and having the utmost difficulty keeping a still-warm corpse from the long arm of the law!
First performed in 1964, Entertaining Mr Sloane was revived in the West End last year with Imelda Staunton as Kath where more than 40 years on it still retained its power to ‘provoke and startle’ and to be ‘… wild, witty and utterly heartless, as well as wonderfully, mercilessly funny’. (Daily Telegraph).
The cast of four: Alexander Rogers (Sloane), Donna Doubtfire (Kath), Eric Partington (Kemp) and John Yates (Ed) are currently busy rehearsing under the direction of Sue Baxter, Head of Drama at St Gabriel’s School Newbury who directed The Marlborough Player’s previous productions of ‘A Day in the Death of Joe Egg’ and ‘The Philanthropist’.
Performances of ‘Entertaining Mr Sloane’ are at 8p.m. on Wednesday 9th, Thursday 10th, Friday 11th and Saturday 12th June at Marlborough Town Hall. Tickets cost £8 and can be reserved by emailing sloanetickets [at] ymail [dot] com, by calling 07786 535400 or from The White Horse Book Shop, High Street, Marlborough
