“In Holland Stands A House” The Story of Anne Frank by Sue Sanders & Cecily O’Neill.
“Writing in a diary is a really strange experience for someone like me. Not only because I’ve never written anything before, but also because it seems to me that later on neither I nor anyone else will be interested in the musings of a thirteen-year-old schoolgirl.” (June 20, 1942)
Anne could not have been further from the truth when writing this in her diary. Nearly 70 years later, people all over the world are still fascinated by her story and, every year, thousands visit the annexe where she spent more than two years, the youngest of the eight hiding from the Nazis, dependent on the help of four others who provided them with food, clothing, medicine, books and other daily necessities without being noticed by the neighbours or the other workers in the office and warehouse.
This play, based on Anne’s diary, skilfully interweaves a dramatized account of events in occupied Europe with domestic scenes from the secret annexe. It also deals with the issue of racism, as well as ethnic and cultural differences which are still problems faced today.
