- Notes: Brief Synopsis of production: SEDOS are delighted to be the first drama society to have secured the rights to perform Frank Wildhorn’s hit musical, Jekyll & Hyde, in London. Following a four-year run on Broadway and a UK national tour starring Paul Nicholas, the show, to be performed in the heart of the East End at Wilton’s Music Hall, promises to be a suitably grand finale to the society’s highly acclaimed centenary season. This pulse-pounding interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic tale “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde”, first published in 1886, tells how a brilliant Victorian doctor, Dr Henry Jekyll, is forced to use himself as the subject of his scientific experiment with disastrous consequences. Convinced that the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of man’s evil and good nature, he unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc on the streets of 19th Century London as the savage Edward Hyde, a monstrous being for whom even murder is a conscience-free pastime. Featured in the 2003 BBC production ‘Restoration’, presented by Griff Rhys Jones, Wilton’s Music Hall has survived the threat of demolition more than once in its chequered history. Now the home of the Broomhill Opera Company, the hall, in all its faded Victorian splendour, is a perfect venue to stage this gothic tale.
