Extra Information

  • Notes: This play is a study of differing ways of life brought into conflict generating misunderstanding and intolerance. The Sawneys are descendants of ancient travellers and are forced to live in a new home. Their way of life disturbs their neighbours, the Jacksons, and their own chaotic pattern of existence is disturbed by their more anarchic acquaintances who descend on the new ‘home’.The play had a controversial opening performance at the Royal Court in 1958, as it was criticised both by the left and the right politically; it was ‘an attack on the welfare state’ and ‘a defence of anarchy’. All these robust, colourful characters represent a cry for tolerance and harmony.
