Extra Information

  • Other Information:
Irma Applewood is middle aged, mid-American and menopausal. Along with a pubescent daughter and a rebellious son, she is confronted with all the pressures of modern life, elderly relatives that are growing frail, running a house, making sure the bills are paid. Even her normally reliable husband, Roy, seems to be falling apart.

Worried about the state of her marriage, she initiates counselling session for her and her husband with their local pastor, a decision that sets in motion a series of events that threatens to tear her family apart. Confronted by her husband’s shock announcement that he seeks gender realignment, Irma has to grapple with her feelings for Roy whilst trying to maintain some sense of normality. As time progresses towards Roy’s impending surgery, Irma makes a choice that challenges the preconceptions of her friends, family and the very concept of love itself.

The reason why I wanted to direct this play,” says director Rebecca Mason, ” is because it has a very different take on the subject matter than I had seen previously. The play is not about Roy and his journey, it’s about the effect that journey has on those around him; his wife, his family, his friends. In many ways I feel that Roy is the antagonist to Irma’s protagonist- this is very much her story and the story of Roy’s transition is told through her eyes. ”

Featuring Wendy Marsh as Irma and Paul Friett as Roy, with Hannah Jacobs, Matt Friett, John Hyde, Shirley Andrews, John Hart, Chris Manning-Perry & Sarah Hills, Looking For Normal runs from 27th March 2010 to 3rd April 2010 (not Sunday) with tickets priced at GBP 7.00. Door open at 7.30pm and performances start at 8.00pm
