Taken from a short story by Oscar Wilde, this comedy by Constance Cox tells of the events following Lord Arthur’s encounter with Mr Podgers, a cheiromantist or palm reader. He reveals that His Lordship will, at some time in the future, commit a serious crime. Arthur is soon to be married and in order to spare his future wife distress and embarrassment he decides that the crime must be committed before the wedding. The task proves more difficult than he anticipated, resulting in hilarious mishaps and several postponements of the marriage.
Although departing from the original in some details, Constance Cox has remained true to the spirit of Oscar Wilde’s story, creating a witty pastiche full of eccentric characters and sparkling dialogue reminiscent of “The Importance of Being Earnest” and “Lady Windermere’s Fan”.
