Extra Information

  • Notes: Operatic society scoops south of England premiere! The Moulin rouge collides with Henley-on-Thames! Woodley light operatic society presents Orpheus in the Underworld – you know that show where they dance the famous Can-Can. And we’re proud to announce that our production of this sparkling show will be a genuine south of England premiere of the exciting new Boosey and Hawkes original 1858 version. This has been staged to great acclaim all over Europe, but we are happy to be the first group in the south of England to do it. Coupled with the fact that it’s the society’s 40th anniversary, and we’re performing at the Kenton theatre in Henley, the third oldest theatre in the country this promises to be a production to remember. Orpheus is a ground-breaking show in every sense, it was the first full-length operetta ever written, and it’s as witty and entertaining as ever. It’s full of Gallic charm and naughtiness and has some wonderfully challenging roles for fine singing actors and actresses. The music is superb, with a dizzying sequence of solos, duets, ensemble and chorus numbers, culminating in the world famous Can- Can. It’s taken 150 years for us to get our hands on the show, and we can’t wait to get started.Come and join us on this exciting journey to the peak of mount Olympus and down to hell …! If you’ve performed in/seen the show before, this fresh original version is very different, so check it out! More details on www.wlos.co.uk
