- Notes: SHADOWLANDS for Little BaddowLittle Baddow Drama Club’s Spring Production for 2006 is the award-winning play “Shadowlands” by William Nicholson. Directed by Ken Rolf, the play will be staged at the Little Baddow Memorial Hall from 26th – 29th April at 7.45 pm, and tickets can be booked now by calling 01245 225509 between 5pm & 9.30pm.”Shadowlands” is based closely on the moving, true-life story of the relationship between the Oxford don and writer C.S Lewis and the American poet Joy Gresham. Lewis, best-known for his “Chronicles of Narnia” books, met, fell in love and married (twice, in fact) Gresham following a trans-Atlantic correspondence that was to lead Gresham and her young son, Douglas, settling in England in the 1950s. The meeting, courtship and marriage of these two seemingly ill-matched literary and theological intellectuals is told in a beautifully-written play which won the Evening Standard Best Play of 1990 Award when it was staged in the West End starring Nigel Hawthorne and Jane Lapotaire. Hawthorne went on to win the Best Actor Emmy on Broadway in 1991 and the play was made into an Oscar-nominated film in 1993 starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Although their life together was one of great happiness and love, it was to be tragically short-lived. Joy was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and died within a few years of their marriage. Lewis, who had not thought that he would ever fall in love or marry, was grief-stricken and, although a committed Christian, was led to question his faith and to question why a God who loves us should allow suffering. Although he questioned, he ultimately never abandoned his Christian beliefs and was inspired to write some of his most profound work. The play weaves the themes of love, loss and acceptance in a moving and uplifting way, and is suitable for all ages. The roles of Lewis and Gresham will be played by local stage veterans Cyril Bagshaw and Lindsay Lloyd. They will be supported by a hugely experienced cast including Paul Randall, John Peregrine, John Richardson and Michael Gray. The role of Douglas will be played by Louis Mitchell of King Edward Grammar School, who is making his acting debut.********************************************************************************************For more information about this production, please call Ken Rolf on 01245 258487.
