• Notes: Lancashire comedy set in the 1960′s. It was made into a film in 1969 starring James Mason, Diana Coupland, Rodney Bewes, Hannah Gordon, Susan Hampshire. About a man who has known great hardship in his life but is determined that his children should be brought up in an atmosphere of truth and self reliance. His youngest daughter Hilda particularly resents this and her refusal to eat a herring that is set in front of her at dinner makes the situation explosive.
