Extra Information
- Notes: Steel Magnolias was first produced on the New York stage in 1987 and in London at the Lyric Theatre in 1989.In the same year it was also made into a smash hit film with a star-studded cast which included Julia Roberts. Our production is directed by Alan Colclough, with his own talented cast. The scene of this bittersweet comedy is Truvy’s beauty salon in the small town of Chinquapin, Louisiana.Alternatively hilarious and touching, the play focuses on six Southern Belles whose lives come together in Truvy’s salon. Soft and sympathetic on the outside, but tough as steel on the inside, we meet this close-knit circle of warm, witty and strong women of very different backgrounds, ages and social standing – whose husbands are mostly absent, depressed or dead – supporting each other through their traumas of life – birth, marriage love and loss, illness, disappointment and death. Loyalty and caring is the key to their deep, abiding friendship which strengthens over the years of shared experiences. The diverse characters are Truvy Jones (Rebecca Thomas) owner of the beauty salon, Annelle (Gemma Harvey) assistant to Truvy, Miss Clairee (Chris Andrews) eccentric, millionaire widow of the former Mayor, Shelby (Ellen Gainsford) prettiest girl in town, M’Lynn (Glenda Willcocks) Shelby’s Mother and socially prominent career woman, and lastly Ouiser (Morarg Davenport) wealthy curmudgeon, acerbic, but lovable. As different as these women’s personalities are, there is nothing they can hide from each other. Together they face their greatest fears and highest hopes with dry wit and self-depreciating style. It is only at the end that we realise the deep strength and purpose that lies behind the witty wisecracks and hilarious one-liners. The play is a tribute to both the power of friendship and the need for a sense of humour.
