  ‘The Boy Friend’ opens at Madame Dubonnet’s finishing school where five young students are dreaming and chatting of the ball that evening—and of their hopes for boyfriends. Polly, another student, has had to invent an imaginary boyfriend because her wealthy and widowed father has forbidden her to date for fear that all boys are after only her money.
  Percival Browne enters, Polly’s father and soon remembers Madame Dubonnet, the Headmistress, from a fling during the war. The old sparks ignite quickly, which soon spreads to the younger generation.
  Enter Tony, a messenger boy, who begins to fall for Polly; she soon invites him to the ball with her that evening, although she knows full well her father would not approve of someone from such an obviously lower station in life.
  Next, Lord and Lady Brockhurst enter the scene, bemoaning the fact that their only son, Tony, has run away from college. The predictable occurs, and that evening at the ball everything is untangled – can the lovers really all be together as easily as they hoped….?
