London, 1952. In a shabby west London flat, a mysterious woman makes an unsuccessful attempt at suicide. She is Hester Collyer, a judge’s wife who has run away with a much younger man called Freddie Page. Freddie is an ex-RAF pilot who is finding it hard to adjust to the post-war world and whose passion for his older lover is dying. After her suicide attempt, Lester’s desperation deepens when her husband turns up, asking her to come back.
This twentieth century classic has been a career high point for Peggy Ashcroft, Penelope Wilton and Greta Scaatchi. It’s the masterpiece of Terence Rattigan, one of Britain’s great playwrights, and a skilful and moving critic of the British way of sex.
An amateur production is association with Samuel French Limited.
