NEMCOM Theatre Company started life in 1923 as New Malden Musical Society.
After 2 years the group became established, gave itself a set of rules, encouraged new members, an with Committee and Officers, became the foundations of today's NEMCOM Theatre Company. The first shows were produced at Surbiton Assembly Rooms. Now nearly 80 years on we have gone from strength to strength. When the Society was reformed after the 1939-95 war the shows were soon taken to the Fortune Theatre, then on to The Scala. Times were changing and the Scala was pulled down for redevelopment, and so it was then that Wimbledon Theatre became our home.
In the days around 1951 the Society was tied closely with the RACS Education Department and it was at this time that the NEMCOM name was first used. NE from New, M from Malden, CO from Co-operative and M for Musical Society.
This was the time of one show a year and the RACS Choral competitions, but this was soon to change as they cut back on their education programme. Following that we became an evening class and then finally broke away - to do our own thing as we are today.
We returned to Surbiton for the first time in many years with our 1975 production of the King and I, and have also played at the Adrian Mann Theatre, Merton and Marlborough Halls, Sutton Public Hall, The Secombe Theatre and the Epsom Playhouse.
The company underwent further change in 1995 when the name was changed from New Malden Operatic Society to NEMCOM Theatre Company. This reflects the fact that we no longer perform Opera and do not rehearse or perform in New Malden! Recent productions have included The Wizard of Oz and Cabaret. We are just about to do a show which has been written by a member of the company and tells the story of the Rat Pack so as you can see we do many varied productions!
Maytc is the youth section of NEMCOM Theatre Company and their president is Simon May who has written many TV hits including the theme tune to Eastenders. They were formed in 1992 for young people and has since put on over 12 shows. It has over 70 members age from 10-20 and they perform, on average, one major production a year - sometimes in conjunction with the adult Company. These shows range from Oklahoma to revues directed by the members themselves. The members are able to develop their acting, as well as singing and dancing and perform at different theatres to gain experience in performing. Maytc, like Nemcom, perform in many theatres but mainly at the Adrian Mann Theatre.
We currently rehearse in Tolworth on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The youth section rehearsing from 6 - 8pm and the adults from 8 - 10pm. We are always looking for new members for both the adult and youth companies (both on and off stage). If you are interested in joining our membership, just £10.00 per year allows you the privilege of an invitation to all social events and to receive a bi-monthly newsletter. To become an acting member you will need to audition for the company - not as bad as it sounds, honest! But if you do not feel that brave you can become a Patron. The support we get from our Patrons and non-acting members throughout the year is invaluable.
For more information about becoming a member of MAYTC (10 yrs - 20 yrs) or a member of Nemcom (15yrs+), or indeed a patron, please visit our website.
