East Norfolk Operatic Society
The group's first production was in 1959 and was, typically for the time, Gilbert and Sullivan - The Mikado. Performing originally in the Norfolk Broad's town of Wroxham, for the last ten years or so, ENOS has performed at the Sprowston High School, Norwich.
Unlike other Societies which have moved away from G & S, ENOS has maintained a proud tradition of promoting the comic operettas - although ever conscious of giving their enthusiastic audiences new twists to the stories! Such as when Nanki Poo made his entrance on a scooter.
East Norfolk Operatic Society performs one major show at Easter, with a series of charity concerts throughout the summer. There is a particularly strong family feel to the group, boasting several husband and wife teams, and shows have often featured grandparents and grandchildren side by side. Descendents of the founding members families have kept the tradition of performance well and truly alive, while a recent production of Princess Ida saw the two rival kings played by two brothers - Clive and Keith Swetman! ENOS is one of the few local groups which still features a 24 piece orchestra, being lucky enough to boast a big enough venue to house one. It has also been a feature that our audiences have particularly enjoyed and commented on.
The forthcoming production is a double bill, featuring The Sorcerer and the much less well-known Sullivan composition, The Zoo. The latter was penned in 1875, and lost for nearly one hundred years, not being seen again by audiences until 1971. It is a short comedy, with no dialogue, very funny indeed. The Sorcerer will feature special effects, such as a genuinely magical teapot..so beware!
Although occasionally producing other operettas such as Merrie England and Die Fledermaus, ENOS will continue to keep the spirit of Gilbert and Sullivan well and truly alive in the heart of Norfolk.
