WIMBLEDON LIGHT OPERA SOCIETY
Wimbledon Light Opera Society (WLOS) has just celebrated its 75th birthday! This great anniversary was marked by the staging of a landmark production of ‘Oklahoma’ at The New Wimbledon Theatre. Ever willing to take on new challenges, WLOS is marking 2005 by staging one of the greatest works in musical theatre – ‘Sweeney Todd, The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’ by the acclaimed composer Stephen Sondheim – who, coincidentally, is also 75 this year.
Founded in 1929, WLOS is a friendly, flourishing society, of some 40 Members and 90 Associate Members, noted for its high standards of performance and particularly ensemble singing. It produces shows twice yearly, in May and November, ranging from opera to G & S to revues and American musicals – in other words, the society is very broad minded and always willing to give something new a go! WLOS is always on the look out for young talent and not so young talent – all are welcome as the society is always interested in new faces, whether for leading roles, ensemble, backstage or front of house.
The major productions are performed in a variety of venues either in Wimbledon or at The London Oratory School Theatre in Fulham. The society also goes carol singing and performs at the local village fair as it is very much a feature of Wimbledon life! If you would like to know more about WLOS, do visit the society website and get in contact. You’ll be assured of a warm welcome.
