Banbury Cross Players have been the premier amateur drama group in the area for over 60 years and we are delighted that we still have few founder members active within our numbers.
Over the years our “home” has moved from the stage of the Church House to the College Theatre and then to our current base – The Mill Arts Centre which offers rehearsal and meetings rooms and – most importantly, a bar!
Whilst most of our productions are performed at The Mill, over the years not only have we taken live theatre to villages around the area but have also had the great privilege of performing open-air at Broughton Castle (the home of Lord & Lady Saye & Sele), at Wroxton Abbey (owned by Fairleigh Dickinson University in the USA) and at the beautiful Minack Theatre in Cornwall.
As well as pursuing our core objective of providing good quality drama to the people of Banbury, we have from time to time “branched out” into film production, a 24-hour play-reading of Shakespeare in the town centre for charity and numerous skits and sketches for the local Lions Club Old Tyme Music Hall.
Each season we put on four full-scale productions in addition to a one-act “taster” evening at the beginning of each season for theatre members and invited guests. As if this were not enough to keep us all busy, the Society meets every Tuesday evening during the season for readings, quizzes, talks and various other social events. Whatever your talents (from masterful soliloquy to making coffee, from creative set-building to sweeping the stage), we are always pleased to see new members and offer a very warm welcome.
