Noel

Coward’s Hay Fever Chinnor Players last performed a Noel Coward play in June 2000. Five years ago the Players performed Post Mortem. To celebrate 40 years as a group we are performing Hay Fever. Coward wrote the play in just three days. Its debut performance took place in London on 6 August 1925, where it helped to establish Coward’s reputation as a playwright. The play is a comedy of bad manners which starts with the arrival of four guests invited independently by different members of the Bliss family for a weekend at their country houses near Maidenhead. It concerns the way they are alternately amused, ignored, humiliated and ultimately abandoned to slink away by themselves during a blazing row.

There will be four performances of the play at the Village Hall on Wednesday 12th, Thursday 13th, Friday 14th and Saturday 15th October. We hope you can join us on at least one of the performances, starting at 7.45pm on each evening. Tickets can be obtained from the Spar Shop in Church Road, Chinnor, Oxfordshire, priced at £5.00 (£3.50 concessions).

If you can help to set up the stage on Saturday 8 th and Sunday 9 th October and/or clear up after the production, on Sunday 16 th October, please contact Joni Lee, our Director for the play on 07900813762.

Arthur Tinty’s 5th Epistle To The Thespians

This article first appeared in Curtain Call, the amateur theatre newsletter for the Eastern Region in April 2004. Arthur is Norfolk through and through and brings his views on amateur theatre from Norfolk.

Well my luvvies, things have not been too happy down at the Felbrigg And Reepham Theatrical Society in the past couple of months although I didn’t get wind of the story until a couple of weeks after the event.

It all happened at their early spring production, some play by J B Priestly. Now I am no fan of Mr Priestly who was a good playwright in his time but I am afraid his time has gone. I’m not really interested in the social class structure of the 1930s and if I wanted to be entertained with a time shift drama I’d settle for an evening in front of the TV with Quantum Leap, Sliders, Goodnight Sweetheart or Dr Who.
