The G.O.D.S was founded in 1914 as the Gloucester Amateur Operatic Society and for the first twenty one years of its existence it performed one Operetta each year (usually a Gilbert and Sullivan) at various theatres throughout the city. The society presented its first straight play in 1936 when it dropped the word ‘Amateur’ and added ‘Dramatic’ to its title. Activities were suspended during the Second World War although several members who were in reserved occupations continued to perform concerts for the troops and for factory workers. The society is now fast approaching its 100 year anniversary and what a bright future is ahead. We have secured a new home at the Conservative Club in the city centre where there is ample rehearsal space and access to the members bar to enable the society to meet, socialise and plan forthcoming events.
