About the Author

THE ORIGINS of the Society go back to the beginning of the last century. Mr. C. E. (Granny) Grantham founded the Leatherhead Pierrots to give pleasure to his friends, entertainment for the townspeople and raise funds for charity. ‘Granny’ was a man of many parts; from premises in Leatherhead the firm he headed were upholsterers, cabinet makers, blind and bedding manufacturers, undertakers and many other things besides – an ideal background for someone with enthusiasm and flair to create an Operatic Society!
HMS Pinafore 1906
The success of The Pierrots led to the formation of The Leatherhead & District Amateur Dramatic & Operatic Society and in January 1906 the staging of HMS Pinafore in the Victoria Hall in Leatherhead High Street with proceeds donated to the newly opened Cottage Hospital. Thereafter the Society performed regularly one or two shows each year – except for a break caused by the First World War ...
