New Stagers Theatre Club is in its 42nd year of non-professional theatre in South West London, although its membership comes from all over the London and SE area.
The group stages four shows a year, one of which, the January pantomime, is always produced from an original script written every year by the group. New Stagers normally performs at the hall of St Anne’s Church in Wandsworth, but has taken past shows to the Wimbledon Studio Theatre (Haunting of Hill House, Steel Magnolias and Wit).
New Stagers has a reputation for being a young and vibrant group, as well as being highly original interpreters of plays both ancient and modern. Recent productions have included a run of Shakespeare comdedies, including Twelfth Night, Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado (The Taming of the Shrew is the next in the series in July 2006). The group has also made a name for itself with modern classics such as Twelve Angry Men, Harvey and Our Country’s Good, and is equally at home with cult shows (The Dice House was a big success in its first UK amateur production in 2005). New Stagers lives up to its name by championing new drama; after Cieran McConville’s The Man Who Dreamed left the Edinburgh festival, the author expanded the play from a one-act show into a full-length drama especially for the group to perform in July 2005.
Anyone needing proof that non-professional theatre is alive, well, thriving and growing should come to a New Stagers show.
