Saint Monica’s Players (SMP) is a north London group based in Southgate that has strived over the last ten years to steer away from the traditional amateur theatre fare. Aside from an annual pantomime, SMP has gained a reputation for doing less well-known, more modern and some might say slightly more challenging productions over last few years. The results have been loyal audiences and a healthy membership, with an average age of 28 and nearly a 50/50 male-female split – something most amateur groups would give their stage-right arms for.

‘Rock-n-Roll Shakespeare’ musicals have been important in SMP’s strategy to distinguish itself over the last few years with shows like ‘Twelfth Night Fever’ and ‘Much Ado Ron’ merging great Shakespeare characters and plot with some of the best loved songs from the last 50 years. Add to that costumes from the 60s, 70s and 80s and some big dance numbers and you have productions that have proved to be a big hit with the local audience and are cheaper than the average show.

SMP also tackled Jesus Christ Superstar and West Side Story in recent years; shows that have the draw of being well-known names but with an edginess and more contemporary feel, as well as the requirement of a youthful but capable cast.
