The play, an original story, is narrated by several characters and they see the action of the play in very different ways.<br /><br />When the Queen dies unexpectedly in childbirth, the country is plunged into mourning. The King isolates himself from court and it&rsquo;s only when a chance discovery by a maid reveals the newly born Princess has an extra finger on one of her hands. Years later and the King hasn&rsquo;t recovered from his wife&rsquo;s death, he has no wish to see his daughter, blaming her in part for the death of her mother. But still, he must observe royal protocol, so he hires a governess to bring her up: his sister-in-law, down on her luck and searching for work.<br /><br />The Governess is bitterly resentful of her circumstances, and she hates the idea of bringing up her stupid sister&rsquo;s brat. To her the Princess Lydia, now a young woman, is nothing more than a whining and spoilt little madam.<br /><br />When the King announces that Lydia will marry Rupert, Prince of a neighbouring country, the Governess prepares her as best she can, glad at last that there may a chance to get her off her hands. Rupert is very excited about the match, and for the first time in her life the King believes his daughter may have some use. But the meeting goes disastrously wrong when the lecherous Rupert kisses Lydia&rsquo;s hand and sees that she has an extra finger. The marriage is immediately called off, and the King, furious, sacks the Governess and banishes Lydia.<br /><br />Lydia, devastated at her father&rsquo;s rejection of her, looks to her aunt for sympathy. In vengeful mood after having lost her job, the Governess tells Lydia that the King wants her dead, and the best thing she can do is save him the job. Lydia, scared and heartbroken, flees the castle and runs deep into the forest where she collapses, exhausted and beaten.<br /><br />Isis, an enchantress, finds Lydia amongst the trees collecting apples, listens to her tale and sympathises with her plight. Lydia has shown the old woman kindness by offering to share her food with her, and Isis tells Lydia of her own predicament.<br /><br />Many years before her only son, Jack, was the victim of a wicked spell. Another enchantress, jealous of Isis, bound her to the forest forever, reducing her power, and putting Jack into a deep sleep from which he can only be awoken by the kiss of a beautiful woman. Isis leads the nervous Lydia to her son&rsquo;s bedside, hoping that she may be the one to restore Jack&rsquo;s life.<br /><br />Hesitatingly, Lydia kisses Jack and to Isis&rsquo; delight, he awakens. The couple fall in love and Isis is thrilled for them. To show her gratitude she casts a spell and Lydia&rsquo;s finger, the cause of so much of her misery, vanishes. But Isis hasn&rsquo;t finished, she still has some scores to settle.<br /><br />In the meantime the King has married the Governess. One evening just before they are about to go to bed, they both start to feel an unusual itching sensation. Suddenly they start to feel a tingling on the side of their palms. In horror they look down as an extra finger starts to unfold on each of their own hands.<br /><br />&lsquo;This is your daughter&rsquo;s devilry!&rsquo; screams the Queen as she realises what&rsquo;s happening, and impulsively she takes a knife and cuts the finger off her hand. But instead of ending the spell, she watches aghast as out of the bloody stump in its place two new fingers sprout and wriggle to the surface.<br /><br />The Queen faints dead away and has to be taken to a sanatorium where she spends the rest of her days, completely out of her wits. The King, on the other hand, realises the meaning of the spell. He wears his extra finger as a badge of shame for what he has done to his daughter, and vows never to put politics above people again. As for Jack and Lydia, now married, they live happily ever after.<br /><br />Suitable for a young cast, this one act play has roles for four males and four females. </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <img src="images/go_to_top.gif" style="border-width: 0px;" /> <b class="ProductDetailHeading">Cast Summary</b><br /><br /> Too Many Fingers: 4M 4F<br /> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <img src="images/go_to_top.gif" style="border-width: 0px;" /> <b class="ProductDetailHeading">Testimonials</b><br /><br /> </td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2"> <img title="Back to Top" src="images/go_to_top.gif" style="border-width: 0px;" /> <b class="ProductDetailHeading">Specifications</b><br /><br /> <table border="0" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"> <tbody><tr> <td style="width: 90px;">Format: </td> <td>Paperback </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Pages: </td> <td>17 </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Dimensions: </td> <td>A5(148mm width x 210mm height) </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Publisher: </td> <td>Jasper Publishing </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Published: </td> <td>2006 </td> </tr> <tr> <td>Language: </td> <td>English </td> </tr> <tr> <td>ISBN: </td> <td>978 1 905993 09 3 </td> </tr> </tbody></table> </td> </tr> </tbody></table> <img src="images/square_icon.gif" border="0" />&nbsp;<a href="Index.html">Home</a>&nbsp; <img src="images/square_icon.gif" border="0" />&nbsp;<a href="http://www.jasperpublishing.com/">Ajax website</a>&nbsp; <img src="images/square_icon.gif" border="0" />&nbsp;<a href="http://www.jasperpublishing.com/NonAjax/">NonAjax website</a>&nbsp; <br /><br /> </td> <td> </td> </tr> </table> </body> </html>
