Theatre in the Square, a group based in Highgate, London, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year by making its 22nd visit to the beautiful Minack Theatre in Cornwall to perform its production of Cyrano de Bergerac. This celebrated work by the French playwright, Edmond Rostand, has appeared in many versions and adaptations over the years, including films where the eponymous hero has been played by such varied stars as Gerard Depardieu and Steve Martin.
We will be performing the play in the witty and delightful modern adaptation by Glyn Maxwell, whose literary talents as a poet, playwright, novelist and librettist have won him awards and nominations in several fields. The poignant story of the man who can express his love for Roxanne through his words, but whose enormous nose blights his prospects of winning her hand, is leavened with great humour, as well as some swordfighting (and a little baking).
Before we travel to Cornwall in September, we will be performing the play in London in July, and not the least of our challenges will be the transition from the confines of our London base to the cliff face of the Minack. But we would not miss it for the world.
