Audition Preparation:

Do have a look at a copy of the play beforehand to get a feel for the individual characters as well as the overall character of the play. Ladies Day is set in Hull. All four of the female characters and Joe, their supervisor come from Hull. Do attempt a Hull accent as best you can but accuracy is not essential. We will look to get help with developing the accent. Please also make sure you arrive on time.

Synopsis:

It’s 2005! Tony Christie is “boss” again thanks to Peter Kay and Comic Relief. Ascot has relocated to York for the year. Pearl, Jan, Shelly and Linda are stood side by side trimming and packing fish in a fish plant in the Hull docks, day in and day out with only their conversation to stop them from going insane. They know what each other had for tea last night. They know what they each watched on telly. How well do they really know each other?

Pearl’s leaving and she wants to go to the races for a leaving do. It seems impossibly expensive at first but fate offers them an opportunity. Hats, heals and fascinators at the ready they make it into the enclosure in the hope of meeting and mingling with the posh, the famous and the wealthy. However, it’s their own lives and each other they become more acquainted with. As the champagne flows, will their luck on the horses hold out?

Characters: 4 Female. 6 Male (will be played by 3 actors)

Pearl (female) Playing age fifties. Experienced in life, wise, motherly towards the others and a quietly pragmatic romantic at heart.

Jan (female) Playing age 40s. Jan is naturally extremely loyal and selfless. She is a devoted single mum. She’s cautious by nature and a traditionalist. Although she gets very drunk in the play, this is very unlike her usually.

Shelly (female) Playing age twenties. Brash and loud, she is materialistic and ambitious but lacks the talent to go with it. She will do whatever it takes including using her looks to get what she wants. She will bend the rules of morality but in the end she is a tender, caring soul: a tart with a heart.

Linda (female) Playing age twenties. A massive Tony Christie fan, Linda is one or two steps behind the rest of the world. There are no airs and graces on her. She is totally authentic as she is. The other’s see her as a bit vulnerable and look after her.

NB: The male characters will be played by three actors. Ideally we are looking for three actors to play two characters each across the age ranges.

Joe (male) Playing age forties to fifties. Supervisor at the fish plant.

Jim McCormack (male) Twenties to forties.TV pundit.

Barry (male) Playing age fifties to sixties. A bookie. Needs to learn to waltz.

Patrick (male) Playing age twenties. Irish Jockey.

Fred (male) Playing age open. A ticket tout.

Kevin (male) Playing age open. A gambler who loses his shirt.
