Extra Information

  • Regular Guildford Opera audiences will be familiar with the excellence of the company’s soloists and making their debut for their next production, Delibes Lakmé, are Hannah Dobra and Tom Morss, who play lovers caught in the volatile world of 19th century British-occupied India.  Lakmé is the daughter of a Brahmin priest and he’s an English army officer. The clash of manners and customs drives the action, which moves between the heady exotic confines of a sacred Temple and a colourful cosmopolitan bazaar.Featuring the famous “Flower Duet”, which has become one of the most familiar numbers any composer has ever written and now forever associated with that British Airways advert, Delibes’ music reflects the cross-cultural tensions, with lyrical melody weaving through oriental harmonies and rhythms. At the same time, flashes of comedy arising from characters at odds with their surroundings lighten what is inevitably a tragic outcome.

“Lakmé” is at Holy Trinity Church, Guildford on Friday 12 May, 7.30 pm and Saturday 13 May, 6.30pm.

The production is fully staged with piano duet accompaniment and sung in English.

Tickets £20 (students £10) from Guildford Tourist Information Centre www.visitguildford.com or 01483 444334

About the Author

Guildford Opera was formed in 1971 with the aim of presenting a wide range of opera and operetta to Guildford audiences. Our directors and designers always ensure the production is entertaining to watch, fun to perform and above all enjoyable. The cast is selected through open auditions and frequently includes rising stars of the London professional opera scene, and young singers straight out of music college. We rehearse at Merrow Methodist Church Hall, Bushy Hill Drive, Guildford every Wednesday evening from 7.30 p.m. to 10.00 p.m. Our productions require non-performing members to help with set design, backstage crew, scenery painting, and administration such as publicity. If you join us, you can enjoy a new social life with a series of events varied enough to appeal to every taste, ranging from theatre visits to dinner parties. Why not have a chat with our Membership Secretary Sue Squirrell at memgoc@guildfordopera.com
