Habeas Corpus, Alan Bennett’s first play, is a comedy set in Brighton in the 1960’s. Here the lust and longing of the permissive society has well and truly taken hold of the the apprentley reasonable Wicksteed family. With a succession of characters ranging from a rampant doctor and a randy vicar to a frustrated flat-chester spinster and a baffled domestic cleaner, this rollicking farce is as saucy and English as a seaside postcard.
