Banbury Cross Players bring this powerful and moving account of the anguish at the heart of a man whose storytelling continues to delight millions the world over to The Mill Arts Centre, Banbury, in February 2018.

It is 1913 in the household of renowned writer and patriot, Rudyard Kipling. The conflict between 15 year old John (‘Jack’) Kipling – with defective vision but desperate to get away from home – and his father, who is determined to send him to war, begins to spiral.

John was commissioned as a second lieutenant into the 2nd Battalion, Irish Guards on 15 August 1914, having just turned 17. He was at the Battle of Loos in September 1915. He had just turned 18.

Rudyard Kipling and his wife, Carrie, interview soldiers from John’s regiment in search of news and speak to one who who served under John. Guardsman Bowe recounts how John led a charge against the German trenches, continuing the attack while other soldiers dropped off in fear.
