Chekhov’s first great play reveals the full force of its comedy and cruelty, with each character deprived of the love or life they want most. A summer’s night by the lake. Konstantin is in love aspiring actress Nina who is about to perform his play. His mother Irina has bought her new boyfriend to watch and he fancies Nina too, who then falls for him in return. A humble teacher loves Masha but she loves Konstantin. The only person that really listens to Masha is the doctor and her mother still has feelings for him, but she’s married to someone else. A striking, funny, melancholy play about the human condition and theatre itself. Presented by special arrangement with Samuel French Ltd.
