A short time ago one of the major national daily newspapers published an article praising British theatre set designers as the best in the world. The piece reminded readers of the backhanded compliment inflicted on a Broadway musical by an American critic many years ago “the audience came out whistling the sets”. The phrase referred, of course, to one of those occasions when the efforts of technical departments of a production eclipsed those of the cast.

As recently reported in ‘The Stage’, a weekly newspaper for the entertainment industry, the performing arts industry face an alarming shortage of backstage staff due to a huge growth market; “for every one person on stage there is an average of three behind the scenes”. Previously these roles have not been high profile, if indeed people knew they existed and the only training available was at university level or a crash course of work experience.

Following the success of White Light’s Training Programme for the first half of 2006 it has now been extended until December 2006. The programme contains various basic and advanced courses on popular lighting consoles, moving lights and a number of other topics.
The courses are generally one day and based at White Light’s Wimbledon office and run from 10am until 4pm. The costs vary but start from £25 with the average around £80.
