Working – A Musical

Working – A Musical

It’s a title that doesn’t tell you much about the show and it is highly probable that you won’t have heard of it or its songs before. But, don’t let that put you off because it is a delightful musical full of social comment with great songs by famous composers such as: Stephen Schwartz (Godspell; Pippin; Wicked), James Taylor (Fire and Rain; You’ve Got a Friend) and Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights; Hamilton).

WORKING is based on a book of interviews with ordinary people by renowned Chicago radio broadcaster, Studs Terkel. In the musical, people talk and sing about what they do all day and how they feel about what they do – using, as far as possible, the actual words of the people interviewed. Due to this, there is a small amount of strong language, so the show may not be suitable for those younger than teenage. WORKING tells the stories of the men and women (comprising 6 women and 5 men) the world so often takes for granted: the schoolteacher, the fast food worker, the waitress, the millworker, the mason, the trucker, the fireman and the housewife, to name just a few. Our cast, playing multiple roles, bring the host of characters to life in this adaptation by Stephen Schwartz and Nina Faso with additional contributions by Gordon Greenberg. Songs are by Craig Carnelia, Micki Grant, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mary Rodgers & Susan Birkenhead, Stephen Schwartz and James Taylor.

Work is a search, sometimes successful, sometimes not, ‘for daily meaning as well as daily bread’ and the hopes, dreams, joys and concerns of the average working American are the focus of this unique, extraordinary musical – WORKING.
